Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

A new twist to the classic car charger for iPod: Track Control. AutoPilot is a sleek, low-profile power adapter AND iPod controller that plugs into the cigarette lighter or power socket in your dashboard or console.

AutoPilot's illuminated knob gives you controls for Play/Pause and Track Forward/Backward. Press play; you get tactile feedback that lets you keep your eyes on the road. It's the perfect complement for iPod touch (or any iPod) while driving; you never have to glance down or touch the face of your iPod.

Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars AutoPilot Charger/aux is exactly what I wanted   September 5, 2010
becksnyc
This product is well made & works perfectly with my Ipod Touch 3rd Gen and my 2009 Hyundai Elantra SE stereo system (without a USB, but with aux input). The unit plugs into our cigarette lighter or electrical port (they're identical) and the aux cord goes into the aux port. We used spiral wrap to keep the cords together, and ran it back to the storage area between the seats, where the ipod lays protected from spills.
It's just perfect and works exactly as promised. The box doesn't list 3rd Gen compatability, but we've had no problems. It's great to play our music AND charge with the same unit.

5 out of 5 stars Works great with iPhone 4   September 4, 2010
Dave Fitz (Tampa, FL)
I was previously using a bluetooth equipped car stereo with my iPhone until I had to trade in the vehicle it was installed in for something newer. I used the bluetooth more for audio streaming than the phone function, so rather than have to use two cables in the new vehicle (one to charge and one for audio out to the aux port), I was getting ready to purchase another bluetooth receiver when I came across the Griffin Autopilot for iPod/iPhone. What really sold me on this unit was having only one connection to the iPhone for both charging and audio. I have a friend who literally wore out the headphone jack on his iPhone (3G) from constant plugging and unplugging, so I was a little concerned about that possibility with my iPhone 4. The design of the Griffin Autopilot has obviously eliminated that concern.

Lately I have been using a GPS app (MotionX Drive) with the iPhone which is a real battery-drainer. The Autopilot's charger stays right on top of it though and is able to charge the iPhone's battery faster than MotionX can drain it. I recently had a two hour drive using MotionX and with iPhone battery starting at about 50%, it took approximately 75 minutes to reach a full charge. Not bad considering it's almost scary how fast MotionX can drain an iPhone battery.

I have not had any issues with sound quality or interference as reported with the previous (iPod only) model. This model being the "updated for iPhone" version, there is obviously no incompatibility message either. Considering the location of my vehicles 12V outlet, I find the iPod controls on the unit to be very convenient and easier to use while driving than my iPhone's touch screen.

At the time of writing this review, I have only owned the unit for two weeks and have no reason to give it any less than a five star rating. It does everything it promises well, so if it holds up over time, it will have saved me the greater expense of installing a bluetooth receiver in my vehicle. Therefore, I have no absolutely no problem with highly recommending this product at this time.

4 out of 5 stars Works as advertised...   September 3, 2010

I looked at a similar product from Monster before I ordered this one. Many of the reviewers of that product said they experienced audio distortion. This one has a low/high switch that I assume pads the output level for lines-in that would otherwise distort. In my Honda Element I leave the switch on low, and the volume level of my AUX matches that of the radio. Great thing.

I haven't used the buttons on the charger itself other than to see if they work, since the 12V jack is over on the passenger side of my dash.

My only complaint is that the LED ring on the charger is much too bright at night, and that it pulses in an irritating fashion when charging the phone. It ends up right on the edge of my vision when I'm driving, so it often catches my eye. It's annoying.

The rest of the product works great, though, and I've already recommended it to friends.

5 out of 5 stars Great product   August 29, 2010

This is a great product and works perfect with the iPhone 4. This is the only one that I found that would allow me to use my own aux' cable. I have an aftermarket installation that has right and left channel RCA ports and using my own cable works perfect. The sound is much improved over using the headphone jack and the controls are very easy to use.

The only con is compared to the monster product is playlist controls.

4 out of 5 stars Griffin AutoPilot (2010) Improved for iPhone 3G...   August 21, 2010

I am happy to report that the iPhone 3G works seamlessly with this updated version...no incompatibility message. This product is a clear winner...

Here's what I like about the product:

+ One plug that both charges the iPhone and outputs music to car's AUX jack...very convenient.
+ Having the option to control basic music functions on the AutoPilots face OR ability to directly use the iPhone interface if you wish (while car is stopped of course!)
+ Great sound...note: I'm no audiophile, but I think I'm noticing enhanced sound over simply using a 3.5mm aux cable from my phone. No GSM interference, balanced highs and lows, and louder!
+ Charge indicator on AutoPilots face is simple, attractive, and handy.
+ Great functionality: Pauses phone when car turns off, minimal lag when using controls.
+ Affordable...especially on Amazon :)

Minor drawbacks:

- AUX cable included could be a bit longer, for those users whose cig lighters and car aux input are not right next to each other, and would like to cleanly run the cable.
- When charging, unit blinks an amber color. This could be a distraction to drivers if the AutoPilot is in peripheral vision.
- Quality of materials/construction is acceptable for the price; however, feel of the buttons when pushed reminds you what you paid for it. Just hoping its durable :)

If you're looking for an affordable solution for your iPhone/iPod car experience, and your car has an AUX jack...look no further. You won't be disappointed in the 2010 Griffin AutoPilot!

PS couple this product with a ProClip mount that is custom for your car, and you've got a pretty slick setup at a price you can't beat.
